How to release Khasi and Garo songs: Spotify, JioSaavn, caller tunes and Wangala timing

By the SUF Digitals team · Updated

Yes, you can release Khasi and Garo songs on Spotify, JioSaavn, YouTube Music, Apple Music and more than 150 other stores. On SUF Digitals you pick Khasi or Garo in the release form, upload your master and cover, and the stores list the song under its own language. Caller tunes on Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL come with every plan, from Rs 999 a year plus GST.

Yes, you can release your Khasi and Garo songs everywhere

Khasi is spoken by about 14.3 lakh people (Census 2011), a count that includes Pnar (Synteng), War and Lyngngam, which the census groups with it. Most live in Meghalaya's Khasi and Jaintia Hills, with smaller numbers in Assam and Bangladesh.

Garo has about 11.5 lakh speakers (Census 2011) in the Garo Hills, Assam and Tripura, and more in Bangladesh. Its folk music includes the music of Wangala, the post-harvest Festival of the Hundred Drums: long dama drums, the closing Dama Gogata dance, and sung styles such as Katta Doka, Dani Doka and Ajia.

Both were associate official languages in parts of Meghalaya from 2005, and in April 2026 a state ordinance made them official languages of Meghalaya alongside English. Whatever you record in them, from a traditional song to a Christmas single, one SUF release reaches Spotify, JioSaavn, YouTube Music, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Gaana, Instagram and more than 150 stores worldwide. Caller tunes on Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL come with it at no extra cost.

How to release a Khasi or Garo song

A Khasi song release and a Garo song upload follow the same steps. The language is set track by track, so one EP can carry songs in both.

  1. Create your SUF Digitals account and pick a plan. Plans start at Rs 999 a year before GST, and on every plan you keep 100% of your copyright.
  2. Add your artist name with your Spotify and Apple Music profile links. On a first release, mark yourself as new to the stores and your artist pages are created with the song.
  3. Create the release and set the language for it and for each track. Khasi and Garo both sit under All languages in the picker, and the stores list the song as Khasi or Garo.
  4. Upload a WAV or FLAC master (16 or 24 bit, 44.1 to 96 kHz) and a square 3000 x 3000 pixel cover in JPG or PNG. The free cover art checker runs the same checks first.
  5. Credit the singers, composers, lyricists and producers, declare the rights in each song and choose the release date. From the Rising plan up the date is yours to pick; on Debut it is set for you, 7 days after you submit.
  6. Submit. SUF checks every release against the stores' rules before it goes out. On release day, share your free smart link, which opens the song straight in each fan's own music app.

Khasi and Garo playlists on Spotify, JioSaavn and Apple Music

We looked for store-run playlists made just for Khasi or Garo songs and found none on Spotify, JioSaavn or Apple Music, as of October 2026. Neither language is in JioSaavn's language menu yet, even though the stores take Khasi or Garo as a song's language.

From the Pro plan up, SUF pitches your release to the editors at Spotify, Apple Music, JioSaavn, Gaana, Amazon Music and YouTube Music, and can pitch a whole EP or album. With no Khasi or Garo list to aim at, the pitch puts your song in front of the editors of wider Indian, folk and devotional playlists.

Lock the release at least 14 days before release day, because Spotify only considers songs pitched 7 days or more ahead. Editors decide, placement is never guaranteed, and SUF never buys streams or playlist spots. Listening by your own fans feeds Release Radar, Daily Mix and Discover Weekly too. More on playlist pitching.

Titles, script and spelling

Khasi has been written in Roman letters since 1841, when the Welsh missionary Thomas Jones introduced the script at Sohra; William Carey had used the Bengali script for it from 1813 to 1838. So a Khasi title is already in the letters people type into a phone.

Garo uses Roman letters too, 20 of them plus the raka, the raised dot in A·chik that marks a glottal stop. The raka is hard to type on a phone keyboard, so write the store title the way your listeners type it, and keep the full spelling for your release description and your YouTube and Instagram captions. In Bangladesh, Garo is also written in a Bengali-script form.

Keep one spelling of your artist name on every release, because a second spelling becomes a second artist page. The name field takes English letters, numbers, spaces and . ' & ( ) - only, so a raka cannot go in it. Make the words on the cover match the title and artist name, and keep emoji, ALL CAPS, feat. and promo words like Official or Latest out of titles.

When Khasi and Garo songs are in demand

December is the main season. Meghalaya was 74.59% Christian in 2011, Christmas is one of the state's biggest festivals, and Shillong and Sohra (Cherrapunji) are known for their celebrations. For a Christmas song, aim for a release day in late November or the first days of December, and lock it by early November.

Garo listeners also have Wangala, held between September and December on dates each village sets, with the big 100 Drums festival at Asanang in West Garo Hills. Count back from the celebration your song is for: three to four weeks before it is a sensible release day.

Whatever the date, on Pro and above the release has to be locked at least two weeks before release day for a pitch. Picking the exact day comes with the Rising plan and above; Debut sets it 7 days after you submit.

Folk, Wangala and Christmas songs: the rights

A traditional song belongs to everyone, so you can release your own recording of an old Wangala song or a carol nobody owns. Mark it Traditional or public domain in the rights step. The recording must be yours: your voice, your musicians, your mix.

A song written by someone else is a cover, and a cover needs the song owner's licence. A remix needs permission from whoever owns the original recording. Our guides to cover songs and devotional music go further.

Only original songs with no samples or non-exclusive beats go on YouTube Content ID. Traditional and public domain songs never do, so a traditional Wangala song or an old carol stays off it.
