How to add your own song to Instagram Reels music (India)

By the SUF Digitals team · Updated

You cannot upload your own song to Instagram's music library yourself. It gets there when a distributor delivers your release to Meta, which runs the music library for Instagram and Facebook. With SUF Digitals, Instagram and Facebook are part of every release, and once Meta has processed it anyone can add your song to Reels and Stories.

How songs get into Instagram's music library

Instagram's music is licensed from rights holders and delivered by distributors and labels. When your distributor sends your release to Meta, the song becomes available in the Instagram and Facebook music library, so people can search it, add it to Reels and Stories, and tap through to your audio page.

Uploading the song as a video or as original audio in a reel is not the same thing. That audio is tied to one post and is not searchable as your song in the library.

Step by step

  1. Release through a distributor that delivers to Meta. On SUF Digitals, Instagram and Facebook are included in every release with Spotify, JioSaavn and the other stores. See how to distribute music in India.
  2. Use your exact artist name and song title. People search the library by both, so spelling matters.
  3. Wait for Meta to process the release. Songs usually appear within days of the release date, and sometimes take longer.
  4. Search the song in Reels. Open the Reels camera, tap the music icon and search your title and artist name. Save the audio.
  5. Post the first reel yourself. Use the hook, set the start point to your best fifteen to thirty seconds, and pin it to your profile.
  6. Share the audio page. Ask fans to tap Use audio from your reel, which is the easiest way for them to make their own.

Why your song is not showing on Instagram

  • It is still processing. Give it a few days after the release date before raising it.
  • Business accounts see a smaller library. Business profiles often get a reduced, licensed-for-business music catalogue, so your song can be missing for them while it shows for personal and creator accounts.
  • Country availability. Music features and licences differ by country, so a song can show in India but not elsewhere, or the reverse.
  • Spelling. Try searching the exact title and artist name as delivered.
  • A rights conflict. If another release claims the same audio, Meta may hold it back. Your distributor can check and dispute it.

Make Instagram work for the song

Reels reward a strong opening. Choose the part of your song that grabs in the first seconds, and post a few reels with it in the first week: a performance clip, a lyric clip and a behind-the-scenes clip. Use your smart link in your bio so people who hear the song in a reel can play it in their own music app in one tap.

If you want the song in other creators' reels, SUF's reel marketing places it with Instagram creators who fit your genre and language, as clearly disclosed paid partnerships.

Common questions

Is it free to add my song to Instagram?

There is no separate charge for Instagram. It comes with the distribution plan you use to release the song to Spotify, JioSaavn and the other stores.

Does Instagram pay royalties for my song?

Meta pays rights holders under its music licences for songs used on Instagram and Facebook, and that revenue is reported with your other stores in your SUF statement.

How long does it take for my song to appear in Reels?

Usually within days of your release date, once Meta has processed the delivery. If it is missing after two weeks, ask your distributor to check.

Can I add a song that was released through another distributor?

Only the distributor that released the song can deliver it to Meta. If you move the song to SUF, it is delivered again with the same ISRC. See how to switch distributors.
