Airtel Hellotunes for artists: how to get your song on Airtel caller tunes

By the SUF Digitals team · Updated

You cannot upload a song to Airtel Hellotunes yourself: it reaches Airtel's caller tune catalogue through a distributor, alongside Jio, Vi and BSNL. Airtel users now set Hellotunes in the Airtel app, not Wynk, and every active Airtel customer gets one free Hellotune every 30 days. Here is how your song gets there, how fans set it, and how it earns.

How a song gets onto Airtel Hellotunes

Airtel takes caller tunes from music labels and distributors, not from individual uploads. When you release with SUF, your song is sent to Airtel, Jio, Vi and BSNL as a caller tune at the same time as Spotify and the other stores, on every plan. You set the caller tune start point on each track, at the hook, with at least 30 seconds of song after it.

Airtel activates it a few days to about two weeks after your release goes live. After that, any Airtel user can find it by title and artist name.

What changed: Wynk is gone, the Airtel app is where it happens

Hellotunes used to be set from the Wynk Music app. Wynk has shut down, and Airtel's own help page now says Wynk can no longer be used to set Hellotunes: they are set in the Airtel app (Airtel). If a guide or a distributor still tells fans to use Wynk, it is out of date.

How Airtel users set your song as their Hellotune

  1. Open the Airtel app (Airtel Thanks) and log in with the Airtel number.
  2. Under All Airtel Services, tap HelloTune.
  3. Search your song title or your artist name.
  4. Tap Set as HelloTune. It can play for all callers or for up to five chosen contacts.

According to Airtel, every prepaid and postpaid customer with an active plan gets one free Hellotune every 30 days, it is not auto-renewed after 30 days, and a monthly pack allows unlimited changes. Tell fans to set it again each month, or your tune quietly stops.

How Hellotunes earn for you

Each month your song is an active Hellotune, Airtel counts it and shares part of what it earns from caller tunes with the rights holders. That reaches you through your distributor on the same statement as your streams, a couple of months after the month it played.

There is no public per-tune rate. SUF's royalty calculator estimates Rs 1 to Rs 3 per active caller tune subscriber a month across telecoms. Read caller tune royalty in India for what moves the number.

Getting more Airtel fans to set your tune

  • Post the four steps above with your song name on release day, in your reels and on your WhatsApp status.
  • Remind fans every 30 days, since Hellotunes are not auto-renewed.
  • Suggest the contacts option: fans who will not set it for everyone often set it for family.
  • Release devotional and festival songs three to four weeks before the festival so the tune is active in time.
  • Do the same for Jio users: see JioTunes for artists.
