How much does Spotify pay per stream in India? (2026)

By the SUF Digitals team · Updated

Spotify does not pay a fixed amount per stream. It shares a pool of revenue in each country by each rights holder's share of streams, so a stream from India earns far less than one from the US. Public estimates put an Indian stream at around 6 to 7 paise (about $0.0008), while premium streams in richer markets pay several times more.

How Spotify actually pays

Spotify collects money from subscriptions and ads in each country, keeps its share, and pays the rest to rights holders according to their share of all streams in that country, which it calls streamshare. Spotify explains the model on its Loud and Clear site.

Three things follow from this. A stream is worth more in a country where subscriptions cost more. A premium listener's stream is worth more than a free listener's. And the value of a stream moves a little every month as total streams and revenue change.

Typical per-stream earnings

One widely cited estimate for Indian listeners is about $0.0008 per stream, roughly Rs 0.067 (Lost Stories Academy). SUF Digitals' royalty calculator uses a wider range of Rs 0.08 to Rs 0.35 per stream, for a mostly Indian audience with some listening abroad.

The 1,000-stream rule

Since April 2024, a track only earns recorded royalties on Spotify if it had at least 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months and a minimum number of unique listeners. The check is rolling, so a song can move in and out of eligibility month to month (Spotify's track monetization rules).

For a small catalogue this matters: ten songs with 200 streams each earn nothing on Spotify, while one song with 2,000 streams does. Focusing promotion on fewer songs helps.

What changes your rate

  • Where your listeners are. US, UK and European streams pay several times an Indian stream.
  • Premium versus free. Premium listeners generate more revenue per stream than free, ad-supported listeners.
  • The month. Rates move with each country's revenue and total streams.
  • Your share of the royalty. Your distributor keeps part of what Spotify pays. On SUF Digitals you keep 80% to 95% depending on your plan.

When you get paid

Spotify reports and pays distributors about two to three months after the month of the streams. Your distributor then credits your share. On SUF Digitals your statement shows every track, store, country and month, and payouts go to your bank account or UPI on your plan's schedule.

How to earn more than streams alone

Spotify is one income line. In India, caller tunes on Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL often earn more than streaming for regional and devotional songs, and YouTube Content ID pays when your song is used in other people's videos. JioSaavn, Apple Music and Amazon Music add their own royalties. See how music royalties work in India.

Common questions

How much does Spotify pay for 1 million streams in India?

Using the India-only estimate of about Rs 0.067 per stream, 10 lakh streams earn roughly Rs 67,000 before your distributor's share. With some listeners abroad, the figure rises.

Does Spotify pay artists directly?

No. Spotify pays your distributor or label, which pays you your share under your agreement.

Why does my statement not match the calculators?

Calculators use averages. Your real rate depends on your listeners' countries, how many are premium and the month. Your statement is the real number.

Do songs under 1,000 streams earn anything on Spotify?

Not recorded royalties from Spotify, under the rule in force since April 2024. They can still earn on other stores such as JioSaavn, YouTube and Apple Music.
